Mundtlig eksamen
Requirements for the course are fulfilled when the student has participated actively in the peer-to-peer scientific discussions at five journal clubs. Active participation includes reading the papers and asking questions during discussion sessions. The examination will consist of two journal club presentations, to be approved by the course responsible after the journal club. Each presentation will consist of four hours of preparation, including reading and preparing the presentation, and one hour for the journal club.

Overordnede kursusmål
The goal is provide understanding and overview of fundamental optical sensing and imaging modalities, their principle of operation, and applications within life science and healthcare.
Læringsmål
En studerende, der fuldt ud har opfyldt kursets mål, vil kunne:
  • explain basic principles underpinning optical sensing.
  • explain basic principles underpinning optical imaging modalities.
  • explain the basics of light-tissue (bio-material) interactions.
  • analyse optical sensing concepts in terms of applicability within life science and healthcare applications
  • analyse optical imaging concepts in terms of applicability within life science and healthcare applications
  • describe and argue specific choice of modality for given applications
  • provide an overview of relevant applications in which photonics-based methods offer advantage(s) and/or complements existing methods.
  • present findings to mixed expert audience in pedagogical manner in a colloquium format.
Kursusindhold
Through presentations of scientific papers, the students will acquire in-depth understanding of the fundamentals and challenges of the research performed in, or related to, the OASIS section. Because of the course format, the students will also practice their skills in presenting, scientific discussions, acting as a moderator and collaborations.

Topics, although not limited to:
- Sensing and imaging systems characterization
- Determination of signal origin (if TPEF, or single-photon excitation, NLOE, etc.)
- Theory on lasers and photonics systems
- Detection schemes in optical sensing and imaging systems
- Limitations on optical sensing and imaging setups imposed by in vivo imaging (e.g.components size, light intensity)
- Biomarkers within different biological applications
- Light-tissue interactions and imaging parameters used in different models
