The course is only offered to PhD students at DTU Management

The course is taught by an external lecturer, Natalie Reid. Natalie Reid has specialized in helping non-native English speaking researchers to get published in international journals. She has written the book: "Getting published in international journals - writing strategies for European Social Scientists". (Ignore the "social scientists"; her techniques apply to most fields).

The course runs as a block course; The course is taught for 1 week in June 2021. from Monday to Wednesday, 9am-16:15pm. Exact dates will be announced later.
Campus Lyngby
The student requires to bring writing samples (from 1 page to an entire paper, it’s up to you by April 1, 2020. These samples should preferably be your own writing, rather than writing edited by a professional. The paper should be double-spaced in a Word format. At the end of the 2-day academic writing course, Natalie will give back the parts that she has edited.

Overordnede kursusmål
Academic Writing is an intensive course that:

• introduces and explains all the unwritten rules of academic English
• covers the primary written rules offers individual and group practice in analysis, criticism, and rewriting

Content includes not only structure, grammar, and punctuation-all of which are critical for publication success-but also the theory of contrastive rhetoric and its implications for all native and non-native writers of English.
Participants learn how to say more with fewer words, write with precision, and avoid ambiguity. They also learn to argue according to Anglo-American rhetorical norms, including
• establishing the purpose clearly
• organizing and focusing content effectively
• structuring sentences and paragraphs for greatest impact
Læringsmål
En studerende, der fuldt ud har opfyldt kursets mål, vil kunne:
  • explain the relevant unwritten rules of academic English
  • apply rules of written academic English to their own writing
  • identify contrastive rhetoric and its implications
  • create a framework for more precise and short writing of own academic argumentation
  • structure sentences and paragraphs for greatest impact
  • organize and focusing own content of academic writing more effectively
  • establish the purpose of an own piece of writing clearly
  • revise own writing based on the provided feedback
