Overordnede kursusmål:

The aim of the course is to introduce PhD students in management, economics and entrepreneurship studies to the concept of nascent entrepreneurship, and the development of a model based on this. At the end of the course the participants will better understand and relate to research in nascent entrepreneurship, the challenges of building a theoretical model and collect data, give a contribution to the entrepreneurship field and coordinate with researchers from different research environments.
At the same time the purpose is to produce active networks across departments and research areas where scientists are able to exchange experiences and ideas. The main benefit for the students will be indeed the possibility to work with high class researchers of the field. The course includes a task where the students are required to work in groups and give a presentation related to the course using the presented theories and literature.

Læringsmål:

En studerende, der fuldt ud har opfyldt kursets mål, vil kunne:
  • Reflect on the notions of nascent entrepreneurship
  • Understand and perform the conceptual development of a model
  • Understand the relevant literature on nascent entrepreneurship
  • Understand nascent entrepreneurial teams
  • Understand the concepts of effectuation and causation
  • Understand methodological challenges in longitudinal research
  • Understand and apply the concept of opportunity development
  • Apply learned concepts to own PhD project

Kursusindhold:

The course contains partly discussion of literature and of theoretical perspectives and partly practical exercise of model development and improvement.
For each subject, the lecturer will give a short introduction. Based on the introduction, the students will be guided through a critical discussion of the issues and the conceptual model.

-Founder Identity and Founder Knowledge Endowments
The role of the founder will be discussed in one day-long session in this workshop on nascent entrepreneurship. The morning session will focus on the role of the founder’s identity in shaping and imprinting firm creation processes. The afternoon session will focus on how the founder’s knowledge endowments affect nascent entrepreneurship.
There are suggested readings for each session. It is expected that students will prepare these prior to class. The sessions will proceed with a group discussion of the readings, highlighting their main ideas as well as the main points of debate. Students will also work on relating the discussed insights to their own research.

-Opportunity Development: Theory and Empirics
The topic of opportunity development will be covered in two sessions within this workshop. The first session will focus on the theoretical conception of opportunities as it has developed in the entrepreneurship literature. The second session will focus on empirical studies on this topic as well as on the challenges of designing a process-oriented inquiry.
There are suggested readings for each session. It is expected that students will prepare these prior to class. The sessions will proceed with a group discussion of the readings, highlighting their main ideas as well as the main points of debate. Students will also work on relating the emerging theoretical and empirical definitions of opportunities to their own research.

The course concludes with discussion of related objects and research questions relevant to each participant’s own research and discussion of how to choose relevant methodologies to cover the research questions.

Hence, the application (max 3 pages) for acceptance on the course shall include:
- Name and contact information
- Institutional affiliation
- Brief description of the PhD project, including theoretical approach, empirical focus and expected contribution.
