Undervisningsform:

Assignments are undertaken prior to, during and after the course. Data collection methods will be presented and applied directly to coding and analysing data, developing and undertaking interviews. Prior to the course the participants will review literature of data collections methods, and their limitations of their use and benefits together with their expected result, theory, framework, model or method, together with a review of current framework, theories, model or methods.

Overordnede kursusmål:

The course will combine presentations and discussions about research approaches, data collection and analysis methods within the context of engineering design related research.

Læringsmål:

En studerende, der fuldt ud har opfyldt kursets mål, vil kunne:
  • Gain knowledge of formulating research questions and hypothesis
  • Review data collection methods for design research
  • Identify limitations and benefits with data collection methods
  • Gain knowledge for selection of the appropriate method for the research questions
  • Gain knowledge of setting up coding schemes
  • Review approaches to analyse empirical data
  • Be able to critically evaluate research study design
  • Describe recent research in the presented areas
  • Develop models from analysed data

Kursusindhold:

The course will focus upon:
1) Formulating research questions and hypothesis
 Selecting relevant methodologies to cover the research questions.

2) Data collection methods expected to be covered:
• Case Construction
• Observation, and protocol analysis
• Experimental methods (design and examples) and triangulation
• Surveys and interviews

3) Data analysis:
• Creating coding schemes
• Units of analysis
• Coder reliability checks

4) Theory building and testing:
• Creating models

5) Evaluation of methods and tools

Litteraturhenvisninger:

Relevant Journal articles will be distributed.

This course will run in english, and will run for a period of 5 days in June.
