The aim of the course is to induce the students to reflect upon the
life as a PhD student, provide them with tools useful for their PhD
period and create a social and scientific network amongst PhD
students within the department. The students will acquire a basic
understanding of the department’s research areas and gain the
necessary generic skills for completing the proposed research
project.

Identify the different research areas within the field of
Systems Biology and situate themselves within this
organisation.
Realize the expectations for a PhD student at the
department.
Identify possible challenges in the PhD-supervisor relationship
and address these in a constructive way using the given tools.
Understand and use feedback techniques.
Identify different kinds of learning styles (incl. their own)
and the implications they have for the organisation of work and
communication with the supervisor.
Know the basic tools and methods of project management for
researchers and transfer the knowledge to their own research
project.
Identify the general symptoms for stress and apply different
techniques for managing stress.
Become aware of their personal and professional strengths and
competencies and clarify the areas for future development.
Understand the fundamental good practice when putting research
results into writing.
Peer-review an article.

Bemærkninger:
Course fee: DKK 3000. The fee covers accomodation, meals and course
materials.
The course is mandatory for all PhD students at DTU Systems Biology
within their first ½ year of study
