Overordnede kursusmål:

Biorefinery is a complex process/technology, which requires multidisciplinary knowledge. To get an insight in the processes, it is required to have knowledge about biomass culturing and characterisation, bioconversion processes, microbiology and life cycle analyses. The aim of the course is to give an insight in the different topics, so that a PhD student quickly can get a holistic overview of the biorefineries. The course will also involve industrial partners and includes excursions to some of the largest biorefineries in the Øresund region. The Øresund region will be in focus during the course. The course is co-organised with our Swedish partners Lund University and the Agricultural University of Sweden in Alnarp. From DTU the following departments participate: DTU Chemical Engineering and DTU Systems Biology as well as DTU Environment.

Læringsmål:

En studerende, der fuldt ud har opfyldt kursets mål, vil kunne:
  • describe the concept of biorefinery.
  • design a biorefinery process based on the composition of different biomasses.
  • define which target products that should be included in the biorefinery concept.
  • select the optimal microorganisms for production of the target products.
  • have an idea about the status of biorefinery technologies of today.

Kursusindhold:

The course will focus on:
- Which crops can be used
- Which pre-treatment is needed
- Fermentation
- Separation
- Financial and environmental life cycle analysis

Litteratur:

Reading material will be supplied before course start. One week of preparation is required for participation in the course.
