Overordnede kursusmål:

The overall objective of the course is to train students in relevant areas of groundwater resource management and groundwater quality. In the first part of the course the students obtain a theoretical and practical knowledge of field methods in groundwater hydrology required for building up mathematical models such as MODFLOW. Thereafter the students will be trained in the MODFLOW model linked to transport modeling to use it as a groundwater management tool. In the second part of the course we will focus on groundwater quality including three major elements: i) deterioration of groundwater quality by human activity and natural sources ii) groundwater geochemistry and biogeochemistry, and iii) reactive transport modeling using PHT3D.

Læringsmål:

En studerende, der fuldt ud har opfyldt kursets mål, vil kunne:
  • Perform hydraulic tests in porous groundwater and is able to determine and interpret the field data
  • Determine geological and hydrogeological parameters for different types of aquifers (porous, karst, fissured) at the catchment scale
  • Link and integrate hydrogeological and geological information to modeling tools (MODFLOW)
  • Utilize available modeling tools, in practice MODFLOW, for groundwater resource management and transfer this knowledge to new field studies
  • Interpret, examine and integrate environmental isotopes and artificial tracers as a tool for managing groundwater resources
  • To apply modeling tools for designing water quality and quantity management programs
  • To describe chemical and microbial processes of aquatic environments and identify the impacts of human activities on aquatic ecosystems
  • Employ reactive transport modeling of diffuse natural and anthropogenic groundwater contaminants to resolve causes and possible solutions
  • Solve problems related to groundwater resources management

Kursusindhold:

Methods for the determination of hydraulic and rock parameters in groundwater systems
Use of software to solve and interpret hydrogeological and geochemical problems
Characterization of sources and processes affecting groundwater quality
Knowledge in chemical and biological processes in aquatic systems
